: MALLRATS IS MALL SHIT
: Flat characters, unrealistic resolution, bad acting. Yes, its a KS film so its not that bad, but its DEFIENTLY his WORST movie.
Flat characters... how so? I mean, you're not dealing with a Chasing Amy type of film. It was meant to be fun. It's got the same depth to its characters as Weird Science or such like.
Bad acting... again, how so? OK, so T.S., what's his name, he wasn't so hot. But I generally kind of ignore him, anyway; his plot wasn't the one that interested me all that much. Mallrats gave us Brodie, and Brodie, in my opinion, is one of the best characters in the Askewniverse.
Unrealistic resolution: How realistic a resolution were you looking for? I'm sorry, but when you're dealing with a guy who makes his big bucks with jokes about sucking 37 dicks, stinkpalms, and beating the shit out of the Easter Bunny, how much realism can you expect? I don't go into these films looking for a true story, I do it looking for a laugh and a good time.
For the record, there have been a few occasions when I've wished I could kick the shit out of the Menlo Park Easter Bunny.
I never made a judgement as to what was the best and what was the worst. I just stated my opinions, what I liked the most and what I liked the least. You do whatever you want.
: Clerks: Genius, but rough (which isn't a bad thing)
Well, yeah. It was a first time effort, and it was pretty darned good. Got him started anyway, so it's all good.
: Mallrats: Lame-o sophmore effort. Bad slapstick, flat characters, etc etc etc
Yes, well, we've gone over that part.
: Chasing Amy: His masterpeice. My girlfriend doesn't like it "The plot doesn't make any sense. She's gay. Then she oh, fall for Ben Affleck!" But its got great great writing and acting and characters.
I'll give you great writing, acting, and characters. But I do agree with your girlfriend, to a point. I also stick with my opinion that as good a film as it is, it's the Smith film I choose to watch the least. It's GOOD, it's just not FUN.
: Dogma: Good, but, yeah, not perfect. I like it a lot, but its not as good as Chasing Amy or Clerks.
Not perfect, I'll give you that. I wouldn't say it's not as good as the others, though. Different, but not better or worse, really.
: J&SBSB: Its like Mallrats, but funnier. I liked it. It was fun. Without being lame like Mallrats. Far from perfect, but it was good.
See, I thought J&SBSB was lamer than Mallrats. At least Mallrats had dialogue. But hey, that's just me, right?
: I'm REALLY looking forward to his next movie.
Well, at least we agree on SOMETHING.
