It's people who use their religion as a means by which to use their illusions that did this shit. They let themselves twist their faith into something that overcame their common sense and common decency... no faith in God or anything should make a person believe that killing is right.
So, to that extent, for as many ways as religion has done good, religion is also our link back to the worst and primal natures of our being... it gives us a magic and an illogic that we can blindly touch upon and reference when our instinct to kill out of blood lust or minor difference wants to kick in. Religion, at its worst, is the last great enabler towards the instinct to discriminate and kill.
I'm gonna start going door to door in communities that harbor prostilitizers, handing out Scientific Americans and copies of The Onion. This is the only sane solution.
