- PAL has an extra 100 scanning lines compared to NTSC (625 scanning lines in PAL compared to 525 for NTSC), and it runs at 25 frames-per-second which makes for an easier conversion to 24 FPS when you transfer to film. Basically, they just do a 1:1 transfer which results in the final "film" version being slightly LONGER than the PAL original that you shoot on (it translates to an addition 2 1/2 minutes per hour of running time). NTSC transfered to film has to do all sorts of weird field conversions and dropping of frames to go from 30 FPS to 24 FPS.
The expansion of running time is the exact opposite of PAL videotapes and DVDs of films shot at 24 FPS, which are time-compressed when converted to 25 FPS PAL.
