: Where's the extra 0, bro?
: If you can do this under 10 grand, more power to ya, but believe me, It's JUST filming it. If you're shooting on Super 16, it needs to be blown up for release. That costs 30 grand. It's an expensive biz, buddy. I'm almost nearing my 80 grand mark.

The expense of a blow-up isn't something that you (or more specifically, your company, which is to say that you should incorporate - hint hint) necessarily have to incur. Many festivals now show video-based work (Hi-8, DV, BetaSP, etc.) and you can do public venue screenings using a video projector. In many cases, you'll be sending out VHS copies of your flick. None of this necessitates having to spend money on a blow-up to film.

While it is important to note that there's going to be money spent in post (on actual editing, ADR, SFx, assembly, etc.), this can all be done, relatively speaking, on the cheap, IF the producer in question is hustling enough and can learn to think outside-the-box.

In the event that your feature is solid enough that someone might want to distribute it (either theatrically or on video), THEY'LL spend the money on it (to either blow it up or clean it up or both). It might come out of your end of the proceeds, but at least you won't have to spend the money out of pocket to do the work.

Always,
Michael Raben
