Sheesh, this gonna be a while. My favorite KPS film and number one on my all-time favorites list is Chasing Amy. I wanted to see it when it was in the theaters but didn't. While I was home from work, licking my wounds (girlfriend finally moved out and went back to Greece after it was long over between us. Sorting out feelings I had for someone else, though after she had left her boyfriend and we were seeing each other became interested in someone else), I bought the video and was blown away. By its honesty, its pull-no-puches attitude and dialogue, its location and by most of all, its subject matter. The fact that the story included comic books was a huge bonus (I wanted to be an inker for the longest time. I have a dear friend who is gay - so I had to have him watch it and he loved it - who calls me TRACER as a nickname) but the movie came into my life at such the right time...words cannot describe it. It's the only movie I can say I rewound and watched and listened to immediately after the first viewing. I didn't realize at the time that it was made by the same guy who made a movie my brother had me watch (CLERKS) which I thought was hilarious.
Sorry for rambling. Saw an opportunity. If you stopped reading a while ago, I'm not offended. But I did want to add an email I sent to the webmaster at www.viewaskew.com back on 12.29.00. I'm gonna reprint it here just so anyone who it was intended for didn't see it (and yeah, what I mention is stuff that anyone can describe in the store by reading Wizard, but I was there, dammit!):
Everyone (literally):
Just want to say "thanks" and "great job" on everything VIEW ASKEW related. This note has been a long time coming, and I finally have gotten 'round to writing it. Waaay back in the summer, my girlfriend and I took a Friday off to run some errands. She wanted to go to IKEA and I wanted to check out some comic shop in Red Bank. I wanted to hit the Stash primarily for the 'Chasing Amy' autographed poster (the movie is hands down my favorite - picked it up at Genovese for ten bucks and watched it at an interesting time in my life when it hit me hard). Anyway, we park around the corner from the shop and walk in and **whoa** ... the way the store is set up is fan-damn-tastic. I love the trenchcoat hanging on the wall, the blueprints in the corner, the display with all of the 'Dogma' photos and other goodies, the way the comics are displayed, and the display cases with all of the statues and models (non VA-related). After finding out from Walt Flanagan that autographed items are pretty much strictly web site offerings, I picked up a 'Clerks' tee, a few books and we took off (yes I know shipping would have been cheaper than gas for the poster, but I was on a mission). That weekend, I ordered the poster and waited to get it framed. I gave it to the framer for Comic Book Heaven (best damn comic shop in Westchester County - and one of the best I've shopped at) around Thanksgiving. Though it's been ready for a little while now, I finally picked it up on Wednesday. And it looks fabulous hanging above the corner workstation I'm typing this at right now. My girlfriend has already told me I won't be getting much work done, staring at Joey Lauren Adams all "googly-eyed". But she knows I didn't want the poster for what's displayed on it (although Ms. Adams is beautiful and is a great bonus to the poster).
And I don't want to exclude anyone, but everybody, from Kevin Smith (who makes great movies) to Brad Plevyak and Chris Alley (who run a great web site) and everyone who has anything to do with View Askew, I want to say "thank you". Your work is greatly appreciated.
Enjoy the New Year, and stay well.
