Everyone, Phantom Menace is the only SW movie since Empire that is COMPLETELY dependent on the following chapters in order for the story to work COMPLETELY. There is so much subtext and setup going on in Phantom Menace that the payoff won't come (but it will) until the next two flicks.

If you watch the DVD, two things become apparent.

The first: George Lucas knows what the fuck he's doing. He's aware he made a kid's flick and that in places he went too far (he specifically says so). But look at this "kids flick" a little more carefully (IN CONTEXT OF THE ENTIRE SERIES - VERY important) and notice the layers of depth and foreshadowing on multiple levels, visual, dialogue, musical et cetera. It's like asking someone to assemble a jigsaw puzzle of the mona lisa only you're missing the smile and the eyes. It looks awkward with those missing pieces, of COURSE it does, but WAIT and see what happens.

The Second: Rick McCallum is really holding Lucas back. He tries to rationalize a weaker cut of the film, a completely digital Jar Jar (literally for the sake of having an all CG character) and he cusses waaay too much for our wholesome Star Wars Universe (joking, but seriously, whose idea do you think that weak Jabba CG in A New Hope was?).

And a sidenote, I know Ewan bitches about the "lack of depth" in these flicks, but when he says "They asked me if I wanted to do star wars I said you're fuckin' right" with the smile of a 12 year old discovering masturbation you know he's got a lot of love and RESPECT for these films.

Maybe you "fans" should follow suit.
