And they only touched slightly on his madness...granted, you can't really go in depth into a murderer's psyche if you're trying to keep him a secret for much of the film, but I wanted to see more, knowing how insane the book made him out to be, especially his little "flight" as he dies in the book...which I thought they were going to try and pull off in depth with Abberline in the film as he expires, but alas, just the single glimpse of Mary...and I'm confused, were we supposed to initially think she was killed? I'm sort of jaded because of the book, so I wasn't looking to see if they were trying to dupe the audience until that last scene of her in Ireland...but as for Gull, they really needed more of his madness...the bit parts of it as he finished up the final murder had the people in my theater uttering things like "Jesus, that guy is nuts" or "Holy fuck, that shit's crazy!" Imagine if they had seen EVERYTHING...
: My sentiments exactly. When I saw that they were really going to try and pull off the last murder I waited in breathless anticipation for Gull to be transported to our present day and say a few words. Of course they were unable to really set it up (since they eliminated gull's visions in favor of aberline's); but i thought they could have thrown it in and just let the audience bask in the killers aura. As it was the final killing was done justice; but i sort of felt that they wetted my appetite without giving the main course.
