The problem wasn't showing who he was at the end; but waiting that long to tell you. In the gn you know pretty much all along who he is; and get to revel in the WHY he is. The book never perports to prove who the ripper is. It is simply a wonderfull story with as much factuall backdrop as Moore could squeeze in. It is -highly- unlikely that gull was in fact the ripper. But what an idea that he might have been!
