He was friends with a lot of creators over at DC. I know he was friends with Bob Kane. Even if he'd never written for DC at the time of "Mallrats," Stan the Man would still know more about a character like Superman than pretty much anybody else. If you know anything about Superman, Stan would certainly know more.
