THe end of "2001: A Space Odysessy" is, in my opinion, kind of like the Book of Revelation. You will never understand it as long as you are determined to understand it in a literal sense. It cannot be understood for what it is. It has to be interpreted because no one can know what Kubrick was thinking when he filmed is. Therefore, as with anything that Kubrick produces, your own interpretation is what matters ultimately, and I'm sure that Kubrick wouldn't care because I don't believe that he made it to entertain; he made it for his own personal reasons.
