With men, it's a compliment. And it's perfectly acceptable for one male to tell another he's ugly as a dog's ass. (while if one chick said that to another....)
Perhaps the more cynical me would say that it's a bigger compliment to tell a guy what a hot looking woman he landed than to express the idea that he himself is good looking. Women are judged by what they look like, men are judged by the quality of woman they're able to bang (which comes not with looks, but $).
It helps that Kevin IS a good looking guy (as well as rich and funny as hell).
I doubt that people complimenting his wife is going to shake up his self esteem.
