I believe that it was mentioned several times that Bethany couldn't have kids - off hand I can only recall the scene with Bethany and Metatron when she questions why she should help God because God was no where around when an infection caused her to be unable to have children, thus leading to the end of her marriage. But I believe it was mentioned earlier in the movie, I just can't think of when exactly.
