And comics were more specifically for kids back then. Even if they weren't, the whole nation was more innocent and idealistic at the time, and worried less about the real world details of their entertainment. You're right that comics leapt wholeheartedly into WW2 and basically ignored Vietnam. If they spent a lot of time addressing the WTC attack without addressing why the heroes don't win the war for us, that might be "half-assed" like you said earlier. However, they could have special one-shot issues with the heroes helping out in the immediate crisis, stand-alone comics that don't have to be addressed in the regulat continuity.
