: At the end of CLERKS it says that Jay & Bob will return in DOGMA. After realizing how much money DOGMA would cost to make it was put off (similar to the reason it took Lucas so long to make the first 3 STAR WARS flicks). Mallrats was made to be a commercial success and the money from that was going to be used to make DOGMA. That didn't happen so CHASING AMY was written, and it became the commercial success that would pave the way for DOGMA. Then as a way to end the maddness J&SBSB was made for us, the fans.

That he would have been a failure as well because he would have a lot of money to pay back and no way of doing that by making other movies.
