He told it at Kent, but he told a lot of stories do please forgive me if I mess something up.

Walt either found this dog or it was one of a litter from a friends dog, I dont remember, but it is a girl and Walt named her Brodie after Jason Lee's character in Mallrats. Walt apparently treats this dog like a human, like an honest to God child. He talked about it all the time, just like it was his daughter. He would come into the office and say things like, "Guess what Brodie did today..." and also interject things like "Brodie doesn't much like it when...." in the middle of a converation about other stuff.

One Walt comes in and says "you guys wont believe how fast Brodie is, she ran around my house 8 times in a minute!" He kept doing this everyday for like a month, just talking about how damned fast this dog was. So eventually it became something the guys said around the office and on sets and one day Mewes said it while filming Mallrats and Kevin decided to put it in the film, thinking no one would ever catch it. When Kevin did a test screening, he invited Walt just to see his reaction. Walt was the only laugh in the whole lot of maybe 500 people who saw it (and apparently Walt has some girly high pitched laugh). And that is the story my friend.

On a side note, Walt use to cradle a toy baby, telling it how much he loved it and stroked its head cooing at it with affection and then he would throw it to the floor and tell Brodie to kill it, which of course Brodie did. She would mull the little plastic child. Walt was the first one of the bunch to have a child and when that happened Kevin and the guys put dow bets on how long they thought the kid would last!
