First, I have to commend most everyone who replied to this post. Those are probably the most thoughtout and intelligent posts I have read during my short history on this board.
: Are members of the male sex more inclined to become fans of Chasing Amy? And if so, Why?
I can't speak for all men, but I like CA not only because Kevin Smith wrote it, but it was the first story purely about love (my definition of Chick Flick) that I could get into. It was really easy to watch (until Holden's big talk) because it dealt with a series of issues that I have dealt with in my life-issues that many men probably deal with. More about those issues in a sec.
:Is it the theory that a man can turn a lesbian straight? And that a lesbian can fall in love with the person regardless of male/female stat's as the movie projects?
Not at all (at least for me). While that is sexually appealing, I think if she would have been straight, you could have had the same appeal. The lesbian part just made the story that much more complex.
On a tangent-in response to earlier posts- Alyssa was a lesbian, pure and simple. Sure she had a hetero past, But I know MANY people who had sex with members of the opposite gender before knowing or admitting they were gay. Why do you think she ran out into the rain? She was just coming to terms with the fact that "Love has no boundaries"(which is what I think is one of the main topics in the film) and love certainly shit on everything she had become. I cant imagine how I would feel if I knew I was in love with another guy, but if I truly did love him, i dont think I could ignore it. Again ture love has no boundaries
BTW- I am very straight and very happy being straight, but Im secure enough to use myself as an example-
: I am a female, and really do appreciate Kevin's bold moves for portraying these types of situations in a positive manner. I dont feel that I could understand a male's perspective on this, even if I reverse the roles. For there is no WAY in hell that I could turn a gay man straight (sp?).
I think you underestimate yourself and men, lets start with yourself first. If you believe the films premise that love knows no boundaries, then you cant say that "there is no way in hell that I could turn a gay man straight". Gender is no different than race, social class, age, wealth, education, looks, even language. These barriers mean nothing. People love, therefore people can fall in love with any other type of people.
You could turn a gay man straight. It isnt probable, but it is possible.
Hell, if I can get a woman to look twice at me, then anything is possible!
Men-we are all pigs, but some of us have our moments. There are a group of us (we keep ourselves well hidden) that have some understanding of women. Im not saying we UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING about you, but we can get by and amaze you with our sensitivity. Kevin is obviously one of those guys, he might not know he has it, but he sure as hell couldnt have written that movie without it.
Listen, I have much more to say, but I have to go. Some other time I will finish.
