I haven't read an actual comic in years, but still keep up with summary's on the net when I get a free Saturday.
The way he was taken out was to cure the Legacy Virus (which was like Mutant AIDS but not blood born) you had to inject into yourself, use your powers then it would become airborne curing everyone and killing the person who used it. Peter did this and died. Not the most scientfic way to deliver a cure but suspension of disbelief.
