The film isn't about turning a gay straight--it's more (this is my own interpretation) about abandoning gender--not sex--roles in pursuit of love.

I don't know any man who thinks he can turn a lesbian straight, although there are many a male who has a lesbian fantasy. One of the ultimate blows to the male ego is having a ex-girlfriend go lesbian, which leads to (probably unnecessary) questions about performance, attentiveness to her needs...that kind of stuff.

"Chasing Amy", I believe, is more a statement about the hypocrasies that are attached to love and relationships, and how we usually do not allow ourselves to listen to hearts (vs. what we think others expect of us in a relationship...we all expect something "normal", but there really is no such thing....)
