In order to become a Jedi Knight the Padwan has to construct his own lightsaber. Each lightsaber is built to the liking of the maker. Also the color of the lightsaber is determined by what gems the Jedi finds. I forgot the name of the gems.
But in The Dark Apprentice, Gantoris makes a lightsaber using 3 gems. It is supposed to be super powerful. I think that it is purple. His switches off when you let go of the switch.
I remember that Vader's stayed on when he chucked it at Luke.
