His saber resembled half of Maul's in the visual dictionary. True. But it means nothing. In fact, his saber in the VD is different from the saber hanging from his belt in TPM.
He has a big fight in Episode II, and Sam Jackson finally gets the chance to kick some ass in Star Wars. In fact, Mace has yet another different saber hilt in Episode II...with a *purple* blade.
It will never be discussed who trained Palpatine. It'll always be one of those unsolved mysteries. Regardless, it is hardly essential to the storyline of the films.
