You take a box with no openings and no light leakage and place a piece of blank film on one end with the emulsion facing outward, then on the opposite end of the box you make a small hole with a pin, and the light entering the hole will transmit the upside down image of what's in front of the box onto the blank film- essentially, the pinhole is acting as a lens. It takes a LONG exposure and this is a very primitive camera, and there's probably more to it than what I've just posted but that's the jist of it.
