Advice for buying a digital camcorder

Sorry this is so off topic, but I plan on buying a digital camcorder in the near future.. what I want to do is be able to record digital video, edit on a pc and take digital pictures.. I know most of them can take digital pics with the use of a flash card..

So, I would just like some input on what to look for and if you could, some good advice on what to buy..

I plan on spending $500-$700.. I have seen models ranging from $450-$1500.... I'm not the rich.. yet :-)
