I can't speak for actual Irish citizens, but in my Irish-American family, the division of Ireland is somewhat of a touchy subject, as is any subject involving the word "British". See, some of my family members died back in the day fighting for a unified free Ireland that never came. After the treaty that split the country, the rest of my family gave up and hopped a boat. (Well, that was one reason -- other unconfirmed speculations center around rumors of IRA involvement, but that's another tale.) And many of my kinfolk are still pissed off about it.

So, basically, what happened almost 80 years ago (or even 900 years ago) may seem like ancient history and no need to get upset to you, but to certain members of my family, it might as well have happened yesterday.

Not jumping on you, just trying to explain why your post stirred up such a shit-storm.
