you didn't NEED to know who these two dude were to enjoy the exchange. Their characters were pretty obvious from the first few lines of dialogue.
Stuff'd need to have that "stand-alone" quality to play well. Having a bunch of "37" jokes and Julie Dwyer references would make YOU giggle, but a cartoony "?" would be in a thought-bubble above most other heads out there in TV-land.
