In "On Directing Film," David Mamet says all films should work as silent pictures, because the power of film is the image, whereas the power of live theater is the spoken word. Obviously, Mamet has a theater background and is thus able to make the distinction, whereas Kevin Smith's background is probably exclusively in film.
I've often thought that Clerks would work better as a stage play. I love the movie, don't get me wrong. I guess we just live in a culture where film is the default medium for long-form drama. It's a shame, as people are missing out on really powerful experiences when they disregard the live theater...
