He does bring up in the Amy introduction itself that LD has gone the way of 8-tracks. My guess is his original statements about DVD were nothing more than playful support of the Laserdisc company they were recording for.

If you look throughout the history of film and other media, you'll find that with every advance, there is usually an interim medium or format that is eventually replaced by another. Laserdisc was the predecessor to DVD just as Betamax was to VHS and 8-tracks were to audio cassettes. Heck, one may even consider the advancement from silent film to audio accompaniment to be such a transition. I suppose this usually happens because, though each of those interim mediums are extremely innovative, they each have a number of flaws, and with time it's inevitable for a newer format to come out and correct those flaws.

So, I suppose if you're an inventer out to make money in the industry, your best bet is not to come up with a new format yourself, but to wait for someone else to, bitch them out about their stupid mistakes, and put out something better. :)
