So after buying my J&SBSB DVD and poking around the web for easter eggs, I keep coming across people who point to the Mallrats DVD commentary track. I only saw Mallrats once on VHS a long time ago (and listened to it frequently during long closing shifts at Blockbuster), so I figured what the heck, I'll rent a copy. I started to watch the commentary when I realized that I didn't remember a thing about the movie except how much I hated it, that it was the black sheep of the Askew films that I always knocked on. "Mallrats sucked, but Clerks was the bomb yo." Something to that effect. So, saving the commentary for later, I decided to just watch the feature.
And you know what? It didn't suck as much as I remembered. In fact, I kind of liked it.
At first, this kind of worried me because I was afraid my initial assessment of other movies might not be correct. "Sweet Moses," I said to myself, "what if I actually might LIKE those Michael Bay films?!?!"
After cooling down, I thought about the order I saw the flicks in. I saw Clerks and Chasing Amy first, and honestly, 'Rats doesn't really compare with the other two. And it shouldn't, in fact it doesn't even really seem like it begs comparison. And, with the cartoon-capades of J&SBSB fresh in my mind, 'Rats didn't seem nearly as silly.
So yeah...'Rats isn't a perfect movie by far, and it's not my favorite askew movie by a longshot...but it really didn't suck as much as I thought it did.

In fact, if you Askiewnies want to use that for marketing purposes, go right ahead. "Mallrats: It doesn't suck as much as you think it did."
