I think most directors know a film's worth isn't always immediately apparent (hence the Loki statement in Dogma, "Fuck you, time will tell on that one.")
Besides, wasn't that apology at the Independent Spirit Awards? And isn't that the occasion of his first date with Jennifer Schwalbach?
Do you really think he intended to bring up a serious apology at a time like that? He was kidding.
