Why do Miramax ALWAYS cut foreign films for USA?

Iron Monkey has been shortened to 85 minutes.
Malena, cut by nine minutes.
Trainspotting, cut.
Human Traffic, cut by twelve minutes.

Also -

Iron Monkey - new soundtrack imposed
Trainspotting - dubbed for the first twenty minutes with less-thick Scottish accents.
Human Traffic - references to english media and objects are dubbed over with american ones (dole/welfare, eastenders/jerry springer).

I imagine they do this to make the films have a broader audience and so make the most cash. But since Miramax's films, on the whole, have a small-but-loyal audience, why dilute and bastardize the films the fans want to see? A broad American audience does not want to see a lot of the foreign Miramax pics, so why taint the viewing experience for those who do?
