: : : I've just completed my weekly Holy Trilogy viewing (Star Wars, not Jersey) and I've found yet another thing that bugs me. This is a curse of a two year (96-97) obsession with trying to be like Randal. Anyway, I figure this isn't exactly off-topic as Star Wars has always been an intrical part the Askewniverse. So here it goes, throughout Empire and Jedi, every major Imperial action or event is cleared or reported to Vader. So, save the Emporer, Vader's the boss. Yet he seems to take orders or appear to be subservant to Grand Moff Tarkin. In fact Vader's at Tarkins right hand side for many of thier scenes together. Grand Mofff Tarkin also seems to be the only Imperial offical older than Vader. Is this some Jedi/age respect thing or does Tarkin remind Vader of Qui-Gon or somthing? Or is it somthing else.

: : the empire, at least in episode 4. He is more like, for lack of better terms, the head of the SS in Nazi Germany. Not really in the chain of command, but capable of making you disappear all the same. And he only reported to the Emperor, so there was nobody else above him. We have to assume that in episode 4 the Emperor sent Vader to the Death Star to see that things had been done correctly. Grand Moff Tarkin was in command of the Death Star, so Vader was therefore subservient to him. Or, it could be like in the Navy, where a captain is in supreme command of his ship (unless he is relieved of command) even if a superior officer is aboard. That superior officer outranks the captain, but effectively has his rank reduced while aboard.
