They change some characters but leave the essential traits intact, it kinda adapts the movie but makes it more acceptable to all the X fans.
Instead of fruitlessly trying to incorporate all the "sagas" (days of the future past and such) they tell individual stories that go accoplating into a larger one smoothly, kinda like the WB's dc cartoons Batman and Superman
