My honest opinion is that he may not be ready to make this move yet. Or maybe he thinks it would mean you two are exclusive (like we all talked about on here earlier this week).
There is never anything wrong with just asking what the situation was about. You care, and so should he. And if he can't talk about it, I would move on, because being with people who can't talk about their feelings is NOT worth your time.
