Green goblin's all "hahaha, nothing can stop me now, Spider-Man", and then he gets whacked in the head... turns out everyone on the bridge is chucking stuff at the goblin! It's not tacked on - an integral theme is how the public doesn't really know what to make of Spider-Man from the publicity, and it shows how popular tide has turned.
