I was 22 years old in 1994 when "Clerks" came out. At the time I was working at a video store when I saw the preview for "Clerks." Everyone that worked there laughed at it and loved the movie because they could identify with it. Most of the customers felt the same way except for a few dumbasses who complained that it was in black and white, but these are the same assholes who returned movies featured in widescreen and complained about "those black bars on the top and bottom." Uh, sir, it's called 'letterbox.'
I enjoyed Kevin's next four films as well. "Mallrats" was funny. I don't care what anyone says. You're entitled to your opinion, but it was very good. Not as good though as "Chasing Amy" and "Dogma." The last one was Kevin's best IMHO. It was very courageous of him to make this movie and it was a very irreverent look at Catholicism and religion. It reminded me of Monty Python's "Life of Brian" with its humor and the way it offended many so-called "Christians." I say Christians in quotes because those people IMHO do not reflect the honest, good people who go to church or live their lives and do not go around imposing their morality or will on others. Yes, I believe in God and I also think He is funny. God has a greta sense of humor and would be laughing at these schmucks on the far-right who think that Tinky Winky is Satan. Actually, he should be sad.
I was not as impressed with "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" as I was with the others. I thought the cast was great. I just think in retrospect that it was a mistake putting Jay and Silent Bob as the leads. They work best in the background, not as the main players. Just my opinion. Feel free to disagree as I am sure most of you will. I like Kevin and respect him as a writer and director. I hope to follow in his and Quentin's footsteps as a filmmaker and writer. And no, I'm not asking for a job. Don't need to. I just want Kevin to know that I appreciate his work. Having said that, I think that his films could be so much better than they already are if he were to cut down on some of the excessive profanity.
I love irreverent humor and admit I have a potty mouth, but sometimes the scatalogical humor goes a bit too far in these movies. Particularly with Jay and his constant references to anal sex and the like. I could be wrong, but I just think that when you have excessive profanity or vulgarity, it gives off the impression that you're scraping the barrel and reaching for the gutter to get a cheap laugh. We get the point. Move on. Other than that, I enjoy Kevin's movies and look forward to more.
