When I was a kid i liked SUPERMAN II more, but upon recently buying the DVDs, SUPERMAN is by far the better of the two films, and about as close to a "perfect" movie as I can think of.
Perhaps if Richard Donner has directed *ALL* of SUPERMAN II, it would have held up better, but overall it's a rather pedestrian affair compared to the brilliant first film. SUPERMAN II very entertaining, but SUPERMAN is far better than SUPERMAN II on nearly every level. I blame the Salkinds for firing Donner and not letting him finish SUPERMAN II (Donner reportedly shot about 1/3 of the footage that was ultimately used in the final version of SUPERMAN II- he actually shot about 2/3 of SUPERMAN II before production was shut doiwn, and half of the material he shot was used in the final film. Interesting how the only two worthy SUPERMAN movies were the ones he was involved in, but I digress...).
