Step one, get yourself a DP who knows what they're doing so that you can concentrate on the actors. With luck, said DP will have their own light meter as well. The good thing about video is that you can actually see how it's working, rather than having to look and guess and back it up with a light meter. But it's still not a bad thing to have on set. Actually, I know plenty of directors who like to have their own light meter on set. I don't see the point myself, but hey, that's cool.
