You shouldn’t look at that way at all. You should be ELATED that Jennifer Lopez is going to be in a View Askew film, as far as equality and "feminism" goes. It will most likely be a fun, light-hearted and funny movie, considering the subject matter. How does casting her somehow crush all your dreams of equality?
(Psst... equality doesn’t quite exist yet anyway, in case you haven’t noticed...)
I work in what I guess you could call "victim’s services," dealing with abused women every day. Jennifer Lopez’s new movie, Enough, is going to fucking kill me. Workload-wise, that is.
If Enough does well, more women than usual will come through the door having fought back because they "saw it in the movies." Yet they’ll still deem themselves "victims." They were hit, so they hit back because J-Lo whooped ass. Then, back in the real world, the guy will inevitably go crazy and decimate them. Anyone can argue that popular culture doesn’t affect people’s actions, but they’ll never sway me on it, because I see it every single day. When the Steelers get pummeled on Sunday afternoon, I know there’s going to be a full waiting room on Monday morning. There’s a lot of chickenshit guys in this world who drink too much and vent their frustrations on the closest human being, i.e. their spouse or girlfriend.
Movies like Enough will simply cause a collective "turning of the tide," so to speak, where an example will be set as to how to deal with such problems. It sets a horrible example of how to retaliate, because quite honestly, more people than you’d expect actually DO follow the lead pop culture sets.
Memo to all women: Tai Bo DOES NOT teach you to fight, so don’t start any shit because Billy fucking Blanks has been your video sensei for the last three weeks.
Anyway, I’m rambling here.
My point is this – maybe the casting of Jennifer Lopez will make "the comic book reading boys" look at women "shimmying in hip huggers" in a different - and better - light. Perhaps as a fan of Kevin’s work, you should expect Kevin to bring something new and inspirational out of Jennifer. Perhaps as a fan of Kevin’s work, you can imagine Jennifer Lopez being an award-winning actress in ten years, based largely upon the View Askew film she made way back in 2002. Why must you immediately see Jennifer Lopez as the stereotypical "very thing which brings feminism to it’s knees?"
