Who is Kevin Smith?

Is there a bio on him somewhere? I loved Dogma (didn't know about the other movies until this web site, will rent them soon) and I caught part of the Star Wars Fan thing and couldn't figure out why Silent Bob was doing this. Is there some history between him and Star Wars? Did he play one of the characters in the first three (4,5,6). I'd like to find out more about him. Thanks.
