: There had to be a point where you hadn't seen a Lynch or Kubrick or Gilliam film, especially Kubrick, his movies are all over the place, can you compare Spartacus to the Shining?

He's not saying that he started on Gilliam with "Brazil", or Kubrick with "Spartacus". He's saying that, over time, he's developed enough respect for said directors to go out and watch a movie by them even if it's three hours. The only thing "Spartacus" and "The Shining" have in common is quality.

But, Mike, he is right that it's a silly reason not to watch the movie. A much better one is the movie itself.

: So why wouldn't you at least give Magnolia a chance? It was a very good movie, and had an especially amazing soundtrack....at least give it a watch

dude, even walking out of the movie, which was the most I ever liked it (as it started to sink in, I gradually grew less and less impressed with it), I never thought that soundtrack had a shred of merit. And, I'd say, if you like Aimee Mann, you'd already be familiar with the soundtrack by now, whether you saw the movie or not.

Anderson does seem to be one of the few filmmakers who's so pretentious that it fills the screen and passes the time even when the movie's gotten bad. [Note: While I wouldn't say that 'Magnolia' ever gets "bad" -- characters singing notwithstanding -- I'm talking about "Hard Eight" with that one. Yes, that's right, "Hard Eight" not "Sydney"! There, I said it! Refer to the original version he wanted to make as "Sydney", it'd make the distinction much easier.]
