: : Interesting.

: : I've been reading a lot of objections, so let me come out and give the other side.

: : I'll preface this by saying I'm obviously a feminist, and not a pop music aficionado.

: : I think she could be excellent in this movie. She's got comic timing, and definitely has the tri-state attitude down. The only thing that worries me is that she has another movie with Affleck coming out not long beforehand and that people will make comparisons.

: : Regardless -- we're talking about a director who's made some of the most fantastic casting discoveries in recent history. I think he knows how to handle an audition, and can judge whether someone is right for the role that he's written.

: : I don't see why people are jumping on the bash-wagon when a) we really have no clue of the plot of the movie or whether Lopez is fitting for the material and b) I severely doubt Smitty would cast anyone for the pure reason that he digs dance music, or something.

: : It's not Britney Spears, after all. We are talking about an accomplished actress.

: : As for Jennifer Lopez being a poor role model for young girls, I'm sorry, but I don't see it. Her music may be light and fluffy, but the basic message behind all of it is "I'm bad, my ass is in charge, and if you don't like it, I'm out the door". I'm totally cool with that.

: : So what if she shakes her ass in videos? Isn't every single woman in the world who goes into the entertainment field judged upon her looks? Let's face it -- it's not fair, and it isn't right, but ANY actress that's cast in any movie is -- unless her name is Judi, Janeane or Joan Allen -- likely to be a pretty little ass-shaker. Every OTHER actress in a Smith movie has been hot action. Besides which, Lopez has been widely criticized ever since she first came up, for having a big ass -- and she doesn't care. She's into her body and I like that. I doubt there is any kind of sexist message in the movie itself. Indeed, I suspect Jersey Girl is one for the ladies.

: : I think people are pissed not so much because Lopez is glamorous, or a pop star, but because she's already well-known, and people aren't used to top-listed movie stars appearing in Smitty movies.

: : Big deal! Get over it! Enough cries of "sell-out". It's silly.

: : Wait until the movie comes out. If casting Lopez was a mistake, we'll know very quickly.

: : On a side note -- Kevin, the comment you made about not coming to the board because of people like Jeweliet was very uncool. She has an honest opinion based upon her genuine feelings and has every right to express it. Yes, it was a bit much to say you hate women, but I hope you can understand people over-reacting out of their own self-image issues.

: : If you don't ever want to read ANY criticism about any of the choices you make, for fuck's sake man, what are you still doing in this biz? This is AMERICA. We live to build our heroes up and tear them down. Again, it isn't fair, but at least you don't have to have a tight ass to do this job.

: : To say you don't come to talk to your fans because some of them might not agree with you on every little issue -- or gasp, might say you are "not completely good" -- is sort of ridiculous. If you stand behind your casting decisions -- which, with one glaring exception, have been booty-rocking fantasTIQUE -- there really isn't a need to be defensive.

: : If you don't like coming here, then don't. It is your world and we are just those proverbial squirrels. But bear in mind this isn't just a gift you're giving to people, that they might have the honor of interacting with Your Highness -- it's also an opportunity to get feedback, and frankly, there are gonna be a lot of others who will have the same criticisms. Save the firepower for your critics, not your fans.

: : Myself, I'm really open to the concept of Lopez in this movie -- it actually excites me.

: : Flame away, you little elitist Radiohead-loving "I was country before country was cool" freaks, flame away.
