Legal issues have also allowed the American Catholic Church to create an environment in which sexual abuse can be covered up. Only 19 states require clergy to report allegations of sex abuse to authorities. Other states don’t allow for the prosecution of sex crimes more than one, five or ten years after a child turns 18. While the attention of the world is on the Church in this matter, individual states have also dropped the ball in allowing these crimes to exist, and for the authority of the Church to remain unquestioned
