I think Hayden was good... you have to understand Lucas's obsession with forcing his actors to play most of their parts "straight." He thinks it is "theatrical." I could go deeper into this but I will leave it at that. When Christensen breaks from the "straight" performances he is really good.
If you need an idea of what I mean just watch Ewan McGregor in Phantom Menace and then in Attack of the Clones. Completely different performance because McGregor (or so it seems) made a big enough stink about it last time and was allowed more Han Solo like dialogue.
I have seen Christensen in Life As a House and he is great. Same with Natalie Portman... it just comes down to that "theatrical" style that Lucas wants from most of his actors in Star Wars.
