The Matrix combines they style of comic books, anime, and Hong Kong Action Movies. The Matrix had the look and feel of graphic novel. The advantage the Matrix over other movies Superman, Spiderman, or Batman is there is no established story so people don't come in with an pre-existing idea of what they are supposed to see. The Matrix will have to deal with this in the sequels, but the original came off as being fresh and orginal.
