Therefore there are occassional "up-notes". The end of his day just happened to be his "Empire" over his "New Hope" day.

: I was watching the DVD some time back and went through all the special features and saw that the original ending to "Clerks" was that Dante gets shot and dies, the movie ends, credits role, you steal cigarettes. You said that it was much better to have it NOT end like that, but the last time I watched it one of my friends pointed out something that I want to ask you about. Throughout the film Dante says life is a series of down notes, he says he likes "Empire Strikes Back" better than "Return of the Jedi" because of that reason alone. Everything in the film that happens to him ends on a down note; the casket falling over, losing the hockey ball, getting fined, etc. What's a bigger down note than death? Everything leads to him getting shot at the end, as I see it, it's the only ending that fits the content of the rest of the movie. As it is now, the film ends basically on a good note; was Dante wrong? If you could address this and shed some light on the situation I would greatly apreciate it, because you wrote that ending it at the beginning for some reason and I can't figure out why. Thanks for your time.
