I think the ending they ended up with is the best of the two. The movie seems to keep on with you than. When Dante dies in the original ending it is just a feeling of, "i watched all this and he dies". I found myself not even caring he died. I think having him live on leaves the ambigious ending of is he or won't he pull out of his slump.
and ambiguity is a good thing
