you're so welcome. Chicago is a great theater town. You might could trade
some of your mechanic skills for acting classes, or the priviledge of
watching rehearsals, or helping with technical stuff. understudying a part
can be humbling, but one can learn a lot that way, from the director and
the actor you're "covering". If you chose a scene (rather than a monologue)
you might be wanting a scene partner. You could post a notice on a bulletin
board (at theater, laundromat, kinkos...) saying you need a scene partner,
and find someone who is interested in working with you. actors have much to
learn from (and teach) eachother.Sometimes novices are more relaxed than
those with finite techniques. Zero in on those actors you find most
believable (in movies, TV, stage, on radio) and suss out what they do (or
don't do) that makes you feel they are living rather than "acting". Oops.
