I'm also Catholic, (baptised Luthern, converted as a teen) and I think that the judge should have stood by his original declaration. I wouldn't say that we are a godless society, but the words were clearly added to appease a Red Scare-driven agenda which had no roots in rationality.
When the Pledge was amended in US Code to include the words 'under God' it violated the first amendment barring the government from endorsing religion.
