just one idea...

the silent bob diner scene w/ holden.

how the film maker chose that particular moment to clarify the focus of the movie.

analysis of how kevin smith uses the silent bob character, as an avatar, or a greek chorus? in this movie.

tie back to his commentaries, dvd insert, etc. saying that the movie reflected real life issues, and that holden reflected his confused views in his real life drama;

holden vs. silent bob? since both are kevin smith... reflecting perhaps through his writing.

i don't recall this being put forth before, but is jay infact tho. based on his friend, infact a duality of kevin smith; you write from your own experiances, i.e. clerks was like his real life at the time;

perhaps jay and silent bob represent two sides of kevin smith;
one the outspoken foul-mouthed fun loving raise hell side
whereas silent bob represents something he keeps hidden, and brings out only once in awhile in subvert covert means; i.e. like in his movies, or his movies themselves; deep, reflective, using a public medium to quietly voice very personal issues, disguised as straightforward comedies.

a conundrum.

where in the film-literal version of the characters; bob is the hand heavy, silent, bodyguard for jay "the enforcer"

when perhaps infact jay's "loud mouthed" antics are reverse... jay's the shield protecting the real silent bob, kevin smith.

ok, alot of this was stream of thought analysis...
not tight enough to form a thesis yet, but just some ideas for your table.
