I thought it was an old opera piece, then reread your message. If he's only been dead for a couple decades, you have to contact whoever owns the rights to the song (it's usually family, but it can really be anyone...Michael Jackson owns a shitload of Beatles songs...hell, if Paul McCartney wants to perform "In My Life" he needs MJ's permission).

The rule is if the piece was written before 1922, it's public domain. If not, you have copyrights.
