I think when the studio feels as though they have a flick that can be made to look like two different films they try to market it to two (or more) different sections of the movie going public at once. The first trailers are for the fans of the previous (well made) movies the latter are for the Halloween crowd. They're just trying to get more bang for thier buck. The Dogma stuff felt a little like this.
